Alchemea College of Audio Engineering

Our main aim at Alchemea is to make students as employable as possible. That is why we integrate a postproduction module into our Diploma curriculum. On this module we teach the art of putting music & dialogue to picture & surround mixing. Many of our students go on to have successful careers in post-production studios all over the world.

Students are set a film dubbing exercise, which include a surround mix. Alchemea has an extensive sound FX library and we also teach the art of lip syncing dialogue and recording foley. As well as practical surround mixing students also learn the theory behind mutli (multi)-channel formats like Dolby Matrix, DTS and Ambisonics.

What is Post Production?

Here are a few definitions from the web:

* Everything that happens to the video and audio after production, i.e. after the footage has been shot. Post production includes video editing, audio editing, titling, colour correction, effects, etc.

* The editing process after the video footage has been shot.

* The phase of production that follows principal photography, in which raw footage is cut and assembled into a finished movie with added soundtrack and visual effects.

* Any video production activity following initial recording. Typically involves editing, addition of background music, voiceover, sound effects, titles, and/or various electronic visual effects. Results in completed production.

* The phase of the motion picture presentation that occurs after the end of the principal photography; usually involves editing, creating special effects and music, mixing of the soundtrack, and planning the release schedule and public relations campaigns.

* All processes that complete the project after filming has been completed. Editing, sound mixing, music, effects and printing/dubs.

* Post production is the general term for the last stage of film production in which photographed scenes (also called footage) are put together into a complete film.

What is Foley?
"The art of Post syncing effects, usually movement related e.g. footsteps, rustling clothes, punches etc. in sync with the picture. Named after Jack Donovan Foley (1891-1967), one of its first practitioners who pioneered the art of adding sound effects to movie soundtracks. The effects are usually made with a miscellaneous assortment of everyday items: springs, flapping cards, beaters on wood blocks and cloth, vegetables, junk metal etc."
